Cat Person (2023) — English Thriller

"Cat Person" is a contemporary exploration of the complexities of dating, centering on Margot, a college sophomore who navigates the awkward waters of romance and expectation. After striking up a flirtatious relationship with Robert, an older man, Margot eagerly anticipates their first in-person meeting. However, the reality of Robert starkly contrasts with the persona he portrayed through their text exchanges, leading to an intense confrontation between expectation and reality. The central conflict in "Cat Person" arises from Margot's disillusionment as she grapples with the disheartening realization that the man before her is not the charming figure she imagined. Directed by Susanna Fogel, the film blends elements of thriller and comedy to explore themes of identity, consent, and the nuances of modern dating. As Margot's evening unfolds, the mood shifts from playful to unsettling, reflecting the complexities of intimate relationships and the often-unspoken challenges faced by young adults today. The narrative delves into the intricacies of communication, particularly in the digital age, while also subtly addressing topics like asexuality and societal expectations surrounding romance. Originating from France and released in 2023, "Cat Person" resonates with a contemporary audience that is increasingly familiar with the pitfalls of modern dating. The film speaks to viewers who find themselves caught between the allure of romantic ideals and the stark truths of real-life interactions. Featuring a notable cast including Emilia Jones and Nicholas Braun, the film invites reflection on the nature of attraction, deception, and the often lonely reality of college life. As Margot faces the consequences of her misjudgments, "Cat Person" poignantly comments on the loneliness that can accompany dating and the social comedy that arises from mismatched expectations.
