Emergency इमरजेंसी (2025) — Hindi Drama

"Emergency" (2025) is a Hindi-language biographical drama directed by Kangana Ranaut, who also stars as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The film chronicles Gandhi's rise from a Congress Party member to India's first female Prime Minister, highlighting pivotal events such as the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War and the controversial declaration of the Emergency in 1975. The narrative delves into her political journey, personal challenges, and the complexities of governance during a tumultuous period in Indian history. The central conflict of "Emergency" revolves around Gandhi's assertion of authority within the Congress Party and her decisive leadership during the 1971 war, which significantly bolstered her popularity. However, the 1975 Allahabad High Court verdict invalidating her election led to the declaration of a national emergency, suspending civil liberties and press freedom. The film explores themes of power, political maneuvering, and the personal toll of leadership. Ranaut's direction aims to provide a nuanced portrayal of Gandhi's tenure, though the film has faced criticism for its dramatization and lack of narrative fluidity. Released in 2025, "Emergency" received mixed reviews from critics. While some praised Ranaut's performance and the film's ambition, others criticized its execution and historical accuracy. The film's portrayal of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots has also been a point of contention, leading to protests from Sikh organizations. Despite these controversies, "Emergency" contributes to the ongoing discourse on India's political history and the complexities of portraying real-life figures on screen.
