Jonaki জোনাকি (2018) — Bangla Fantasy

In the 2018 film *Jonaki*, directed by Aditya Vikram Sengupta, an 80-year-old woman named Jonaki, portrayed by Lolita Chatterjee, lies in a comatose state, revisiting her past through a series of surreal and fragmented memories. As she drifts between consciousness and unconsciousness, Jonaki reflects on her life, including a forbidden love affair with a Christian man, played by Jim Sarbh, and the societal constraints imposed by her strict parents, portrayed by Sumanto Chattopadhyay and Ratnabali Bhattacharjee. The film delves into themes of love, loss, and the passage of time, exploring how memories shape one's identity and the enduring impact of unfulfilled desires. Sengupta employs a minimalist narrative style, using evocative imagery and a haunting sound design to create a dreamlike atmosphere that blurs the lines between reality and memory. The cinematography, also by Sengupta, captures the decaying remnants of a once-vibrant mansion, symbolizing the erosion of time and the fragility of human existence. *Jonaki* premiered at the 47th International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2018, where it was nominated for the Netpac Award. The film received critical acclaim for its experimental approach and visual storytelling, though it also garnered mixed reactions from audiences. With a runtime of 95 minutes, *Jonaki* is a contemplative exploration of memory and identity, offering a poignant reflection on the human condition.
