Set in 2016 BCE, "Mohenjo Daro" follows Sarman (Hrithik Roshan), a young indigo farmer from Amri, who travels to the ancient city of Mohenjo Daro. There, he saves Chaani (Pooja Hegde), the priest's daughter, from a street mishap, leading to a deepening bond between them. As their relationship develops, Sarman confronts Maham (Kabir Bedi) and his son Moonja (Arunoday Singh), who are plotting to seize control of the city. Sarman's journey becomes a quest to challenge the city's elite and protect its people. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, "Mohenjo Daro" is a period action-adventure film that delves into themes of love, power, and social justice. The film's tone is epic and adventurous, with grand action sequences and romantic elements. Gowariker's meticulous research into the Indus Valley civilization is evident in the film's detailed set designs and costumes, aiming to authentically depict the ancient world. The soundtrack, composed by A.R. Rahman, complements the film's grandeur with its evocative music. Upon its release in 2016, "Mohenjo Daro" received mixed reviews from critics. While the performances of Roshan and Hegde, along with the film's visual appeal, were praised, the screenplay and historical inaccuracies drew criticism. The film performed modestly at the box office, grossing approximately ₹102.82 crore worldwide in its first ten days. Despite its commercial performance, "Mohenjo Daro" stands as a significant attempt in Indian cinema to explore ancient history through a romanticized narrative, reflecting the era's fascination with epic storytelling.
