Nayakan நாயகன் (1987) — Tamil Drama

In 1987, Indian cinema witnessed the release of "Nayakan," a Tamil-language crime drama directed by Mani Ratnam. The film follows Velu Naicker (Kamal Haasan), a young boy from Tamil Nadu who, after witnessing his father's murder by corrupt police officers, flees to Bombay. There, he becomes a prominent figure in the city's underworld, rising from a slum dweller to a respected crime lord. "Nayakan" delves into themes of justice, revenge, and the moral complexities of its protagonist. The film's tone is intense and contemplative, exploring the blurred lines between right and wrong as Velu's journey unfolds. Ratnam's direction, combined with Ilaiyaraaja's evocative music and P. C. Sreeram's cinematography, creates a compelling narrative that resonates with audiences. Upon its release, "Nayakan" received critical acclaim and commercial success, running for over 175 days in theaters. Kamal Haasan's performance earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor. The film was also India's official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 60th Academy Awards. Its enduring legacy is evident in its inclusion in TIME's "All-Time 100 Best Films" and its re-release in 2025, which was met with enthusiastic reception from fans.
