Revolver Lily リボルバー・リリー (2023) — Japanese Action

In 1924 Tokyo, Yuri Ozone, a retired assassin with a blood-soaked past, now runs a modest brothel. Her life takes a perilous turn when she encounters Shinta, an orphan whose family was brutally murdered. Shinta holds crucial information about a substantial sum of money reported missing by the Imperial Japanese Army. As they seek the missing funds, they find themselves relentlessly pursued by soldiers intent on silencing them. Directed by Isao Yukisada, "Revolver Lily" is a period action film that delves into themes of redemption, survival, and the haunting shadows of war. Yukisada, known for his work on "Go" (2001) and "Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World" (2004), brings a romanticized yet action-packed narrative to the screen. The film's tone is taut and kinetic, with meticulously choreographed action sequences that underscore the protagonist's struggle against a backdrop of political intrigue. Set against the backdrop of the Taisho period, "Revolver Lily" offers a stylized portrayal of 1920s Japan. The film has been noted for its lavish production design and action sequences, though some critics have found the narrative to be convoluted. The film's anti-war message is conveyed through its portrayal of the destructive consequences of militarism. "Revolver Lily" is a notable entry in the action genre, appealing to viewers interested in period dramas with strong female leads and intense action.
